Self-Cleaning Pool Technology: What It Actually Does Today

"Self-cleaning pool" is more of a marketing phrase than a literal description, worth understanding what the underlying technology actually handles versus what still needs a person. Gleannloch Farms routes pool and backyard plans through its HOA architectural review, and golf-course-adjacent lots there need drainage planned so runoff moves correctly relative to the course, both addressed in the design step.

In-Floor Cleaning Systems

In-floor cleaning systems use pop-up nozzles built into the pool floor and walls that pulse in sequence, pushing debris toward the main drain; they're typically installed during initial construction since retrofitting the plumbing into an existing shell is far more invasive. They handle debris circulation well but don't replace chemistry management or periodic brushing.

What "Self-Cleaning" Doesn't Cover

Even the most advanced current systems don't test or balance water chemistry on their own (a separate monitoring system, see AI and Smart Monitoring, handles that piece if paired together) and don't replace periodic filter service. If a fully autonomous, zero-maintenance pool is the goal, it's worth discussing realistic expectations with a builder during design rather than assuming current technology eliminates maintenance entirely.
